I use one of those half inch wide leather straps with a button on it on the headstock just beyond the nut (again, like lots or people). I use two capos with plastic sleeves (Kat Eyz and McKinney), but only one with a rubber pad (Shubb), so I can't compare degrees of hardness. However, I have discovered that the position of the capo on the fret does make a substantial difference in sound.
